Camp Allen
(Oakland)
A Civil War-period post in Oakland, it
had been established for the training of volunteers before they
were sent east, chiefly to join Colonel Edward Dexter Baker's
71st Pennsylvania Regiment
(1st California Regiment). Other men assigned to the camp
found themselves serving monotonous guard duty at warehouses
or on some of the islands in San Francisco Bay.
Not to be confused with the California
Militia's Camp Allen located
in neighboring Encinal de Alameda
