Drake's Fort
 
In June of1579, Sir Francis Drake constructed a short lived, crude fortification at Drake's Bay in the neighborhood of Point Reyes, north of San Francisco. He had been compelled to make the landing in order to make ship repairs, presenting him with the opportunity to lay claim to the land, which he named Nova Albion (New England).
