The following article was copied from the December 22, 1917 issue of California Home Guard News

One of the first companies organized. Organization perfected the night after the declaration of war with Germany; raised several hundred dollars and purchased uniforms complete. The city of Eagle Rock purchased sixty Springfields, with 3,000 rounds of ammunition. We equipped a rifle range, and conducted rifle practice.

Things went along fine until September, when the membership, realizing that they were not receiving the proper support, lost interest,We would like to see the Home Guard
properly recognized, but it looks doubtful, as new permits are being refused, which would indicate that all licenses would be revoked. Whether we have National Guard or not, Home Guards will prove of great value, and we are in hearty accord with you in trying to secure the proper kind of State assistance.
