Fort Visalia
by Robert B. Roberts
The town of Visalia, Tulare County, was
first established in November 1852 when a group of settlers led
by Nathaniel Vise erected a fort on the block now bounded by
Garden, Bridge, Race and Oak streets. The town grew so rapidly
that in the following year the county seat was moved from Woodsville
to Visalia. It is not definitely known when the fort was finally
dismantled; it was still standing in 1860.
