Located on land in Siskiyou and Modoc Counties, seven miles southeast
of Tulelake, California.
SIte History:
The Tule Lake Reception Center consisted of approximately 5,804
acres. Prior to 1 July 1940 the United States acquired 3,502.00
acres. On 22 June 1942, the Department of the Interior, Bureau
of Reclamation transferred 3,502.00 Acres to the War Relocation
Authority. In 1943, 351.72 lease acres were acquired from various
owners. An additional estimated 1,950 acres were discovered during
data reviews and interviews. On November 1947, 3502.00 acres
were re-transferred to the Department of Interior, Bureau of
Reclamation, along with the 351.72 lease acres. No records of
acquisition or transfer were located for the additional 1,950
acres of land. However, research during site investigation indicated
that in 1946, a majority of the 1,950 acres were homesteaded.
The site was used by the War Department
as a Japanese relocation center. The improvements were barracks,
an ice house, mess hall, hospital, hog slaughtering facility,
recreation building, education building, carpenter shop, blacksmith
shop, pumphouse, water tower and tank, garages, storage buildings,
oilhouses, latrines, administration building, gas pumps, paint
shop, roads, roadways, bridges, fences, guard towers, and sewer
and water systems.
Some references indicate that the military
garrison was initially named Camp Newall.

Prior to 1 July 1940, the United States
acquired 3,502.00 acres. On 22 June 1942, the Department of Interior,
Bureau of Reclamation (DOIBOR) transferred 3,502.00 acres to
the War Relocation Authority (WRA). In 1943, 351.72 lease acres
were acquired from various owners. Total acreage acquired for
the site was 3,853.72. In addition to the total reported acreage,
approximately 1,950 acres of land associated with Farm Area 1
and the Reception Area was discovered during data review. Total
acreage acquired for the site consisted of approximately 5,804
acres.
The site was known as the Tule Lake Wildlife
Refuge, Tule Lake Japanese Reception Center, Japanese Relocation
Center, Tule Lake War Relocation Area, Tule Lake Relocation Center,
Newell, and Tule Lake War Relocation Area, CA. It was situated
on land 7 miles southeast of Tulelake, in Siskiyou and Modoc
Counties, CA and was used by the War Department as a Japanese
relocation center. The improvements were barracks, an ice house,
mess hall, hospital, hog slaughtering facility, recreation building,
education building, carpenter shop, blacksmith shop, pumphouse,
water tower and tank, garages, storage buildings, oilhouses,

On 18 November 1947, 3502.00 acres were
re-transferred to the DOIBOR, along with the 351.72 lease acres.

indicated that in 1946 a majority of the 1,950 acres were homesteaded.
