Marine Corps Logistics Base Yermo Annex
(Yermo Holding and Reconsignment Point; Yerma Sub-Depot, Mira Loma Quartermaster Depot; Yermo Sub-Depot, Lathrop Transportation Corps Depot, Yermo Army Service Forces Depot)

The Barstow Marine Corps Logistics Base serves as a storage, distribution, and maintenance depot for Marine Corps facilities in the Pacific area and western portions of the United States. Equipment, weapons and supplies are warehoused, repaired, remanufactured and redistributed at this active base, which is the primary Marine Corps facility with this function west of the Mississippi. The depot is composed of three locations east of Barstow: The 2,000 acre Yermo Annex; the Main Base at the Nebo Facility, two miles west of the Yermo Annex; and in between the two, south of Interstate 40, the Marine Corps Rifle Range. All together, the Marine Corps Logistics Base covers over 5,000 acres, and employs 2,500 people. Direct rail links to Los Angeles and San Diego, and the intersection of major interstate highways continue to make this a strategic location. There are several nearby Marine Corps facilities served by the Barstow Logistics Base: the 900 square mile Twenty Nine Palms Combat Center is 25 miles to the southeast; Camp Pendleton, with its population of 50,000 is 100 miles south; and less than 150 miles away is the San Diego Recruit Depot where over 21,000 Marines are trained every year.

US Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District History (1995)

On 16 January 1942, a memo from the Quartermaster Corps' Operations Branch requested that property be acquired for the development of a Lend Lease Depot near Daggett, California. Executive Order No. 9143, dated 21 April 1942, transferred 302.00 acres from the Department of the Interior to the War Department for the Yermo Holding and Reconsignment Depot. The War Department also acquired a fee interest in 1568.22 acres through private property purchases between 18 June 1942 and 3 September 1943. The War Department acquired an additional fee interest in 148 acres by Declarations of Taking between 3 September 1943 and 2 May 1946. Hence, a total of 2018.22 acres were acquired by the War Department for the Holding and Reconsignment Depot at Yermo, California.

The Holding and Reconsignment Depot at Yermo was developed as a facility for storing lend lease and other supplies already consigned to specific destinations. The depot at Yermo provided a number of railroad spurs and sidings, loading and unloading docks, and switching yards for that purpose. In addition, 140 buildings were constructed on the site including administration buildings, barracks, dormitories, officers' quarters, warehouses, mess and maintenance facilities.

On 16 March 1944, 8.058 acres of the Yermo Holding and Reconsignment Depot was conveyed to the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad Company by quitclaim deed. On 5 June 1946, the War Department granted a lease to the Navy Department to use and occupy the depot, redesignated the Mira Lorna Quartermaster Subdepot Military Reservation, until 27 January 1947. However, on 15 November 1946, the remaining 2010.162 acres was declared surplus by the War Department and, effective 10 January 1947, control and jurisdiction of the designated Yermo Army Service Forces Depot was transferred to the Navy Department. This 2010.162 acre active site is now designated as the Marine Corps Supply Center (Yermo Area). The 8.058 acre site deeded to the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railway, roughly 100 feet in width and 3,510 feet long, is currently owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad. The only structures on the site are a small, modern administration building and warehouse used by the railroad. There are no structures on the site attributable to War Department activity. Underground facilities on the site, such as tanks and pipelines, have been beneficially used by the two railroad companies.

US Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District History (1994)

Location: The site is located south and west of Yermo, California, between Interstate 40 and Interstate 15.

Site History: The holding and reconsignment depot at Yermo was developed as a facility for storing supplies and lend lease supplies already consigned to specific destinations. Depots, such as the one at Yermo, were developed in 1942 throughout the United States to address critical shortages in equipment and supply storage space.

Typically, the holding and reconsignment depots were hastily constructed for limited service, and were constructed of substitute building materials due to shortages in traditional construction materials. The depots were used as reservoirs for bulk storage often consisting of open-type storage sheds.

On 16 March 1944, 8.058 acres of the Holding and Reconsignment Depot were conveyed to the Los Angeles and Salt Lake (LA&SL) Railroad Company by quitclaim deed. That property is roughly 100 feet wide and 3,500 feet long. It primarily consists of railroad tracks and switching equipment which were part of an extensive switching yard for railcars entering and leaving he depot. This property has been beneficially used by the LA&SL railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad, the current owners of the property. The remainder of the depot was transferred to the Navy Department. It is an active 2,010.162 acre installation, designated the Marine Corps Supply Center (Yermo Area) .
