California Wildfires, 1957

National Guard Response

Fires were rampant in the Mt. Gleason, San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Barbara area and the San Bernardino Mountains on 12 September 1957. The U. S. Forestry Service at Arcadia again called for volunteers to drive CAL ARNG 2½-ton trucks. Twelve drivers and six trucks hauled equipment and personnel for a total of 2,870 miles over a four-day period. The fires were under control on 16 September 1957.

A forest fire broke out 25 miles northeast of Crescent City at Gasquet Mountain on 19 September 1957. The California Army National Guard responded to the request of the U. S. Forest Service and provided six 2½-ton trucks to haul personnel and equipment with 20 men who acted as drivers and assisted in preparing food for the fire fighters. Four days later the fire was under control and the volunteers were returned to their civilian occupations.
