California Militia and National Guard Unit Histories

6th (German) Infantry Regiment, California Militia

 

The 6th (German) Infantry Regiment was formed in 1864 from newly raised infantry companies recruited from San Francisco's German speaking and other European immigrant communities. The 6th Infantry was made up of the following companies:

 

• California Fusiliers (or Fusileers) (Company A)
• Sigel Guard (Company B)
• Ellis Guard (Company C)
• California Grenadiers (Company D)
• Steuben Guard (Company E)
• San Francisco Tirailleurs (Company F)
• Germania Guard (Company G)
• California Musketeers (Company H)
• Tittle Zouaves (Company I)
• San Francisco Jaegers (or Yaegers) (Company K)

 

In 1866, as part of the reorganization of the war-time California Militia into the smaller National Guard of California, the 6th Infantry was disbanded
