District History (1999)
The Navy acquired a total of 74.552 acres
for the Naval Radio Station, including 73.65 acres in fee from
Mr. Harry Flavel Carling on 21 July 1914, and 0.902 acre in easement
from the City of San Diego on 27 June 1995.
The Navy first used the site for a high-power radio transmitter
facility. In 1943 facilities included three 600-foot towers,
a powerhouse, condenser house, pump house, blower house, office,
garage, shop, and housing for a small number of officers and
enlisted men, for a total of 26 buildings. In 1996 the Navy constructed
approximately 412 housing units on the site.
On 27 June 1995 the Navy conveyed a 0.875-acre portion of the
property to the City of San Diego (in exchange for the above
mentioned 0.902-acre easement acquired on the same date). With
the exception of a property line fence which is still in existence,
the Navy is not known to have made any improvements to the disposed
property. The 0.875-acre area is now part of the
Chollas Lake Community Park.
