Camp at Santa
Cruz (1887)
A California National
Guard "Camp of Instruction," it was established on
July 15, 1887, by Colonel William R. Shafter, 1st Infantry, with
Companies A, C, D, E, F, G, l, and K, and a detachment of the
1st Artillery Regiment, aggregating 326 men. The command had
assembled at the Presidio of San Francisco, July 5, 1887, and
marched, with intermediate stops, 90 miles to Santa Cruz.
