Independence Auxiliary Field
Independence Auxiliary
Field, circa 1943
During World War II, the airport was used
by the US Army Air Forces as an auxiliary training airfield for
the contract flying school at Lone Pine Airport, California.
US Army Corps of Engineers History
The airport, established in 1928, is located
on 118.45 acres of land which is leased to the County of Inyo
by the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for
operation as a public airport.
This field served as an auxiliary field for the Contract Flying
School at Lone Pine Airport that provided primary level pilot
training to aviation cadets of the Army Air Corps. The school
was operated by Ross Aeronautical School from March 1942 until
August 1943
As this was under the control of a private corporation contracted
through the Defense Plant Corporation (PLANCOR), no War Department
disposal actions were necessary. After the end
of World War II, Inyo County continued the operation of Independence
Airport as a public airport.
