US Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District History (1999)

The Los Angeles U.S.N. Repair Depot consisted of 16 parcels located in the city of Vernon, Los Angeles County, California. The total land area of the property was 13.241 acres. The Navy Department leased 3.043 acres (Parcels 8, 11 and 13) from three corporate entities during June, July and November 1943, respectively. The remaining 10.198 acres, also owned by corporate entities, was leased to the Navy on July 11, 1943 as part of a condemnation proceeding.

The Navy utilized the Los Angeles U.S.N. Repair Depot as a warehousing and assembly depot, and as an equipment repair depot. Prior to Navy occupancy, the improved portions of the property contained a warehouse, shop and office buildings, two fuel underground storage tanks (one diesel and one gasoline) and a spur track. During its occupancy by the Navy, additional shops and warehouses were constructed, and fuel dispensing facilities and supplemental subsurface utilities were added. Navy-related improvements included three warehouses, a paint shop, a machine
shop and a carpenter shop.

The 13.241-acre site was declared surplus by the Navy Department and was transferred to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) on September 1, 1945. The RFC intended to use
the facility as a disposal center for the storage of surplus property from any of the U.S. Government branches. The Warehousing Division of the Navy released the facility as a disposal center on March 31, 1947. Leases for specific parcels were terminated during the period from 1947 through 1949. The property currently is under private ownership and is utilized for industrial purposes.

Site History: The Navy leased a total of 13.241 acres of land during 1943 for use as a repair depot. The property consisted of 16 parcels. Three of the parcels (Parcels 8, 11 and 13), containing approximately 3.043 acres, were leased from three separate corporate entities during June, July and November. The remaining 10.198 acres, also owned by corporate entities, were leased as part of a condemnation complaint, Number 2985-Y Civil. The Navy utilized the Los Angeles U.S.N. Repair Depot as both as a warehousing and assembly depot, and as an equipment repair depot. Navy-related improvements to the property included three warehouses, a paint shop, a machine shop and a carpenter shop.

In addition, fuel dispensing facilities and supplemental subsurface utilities were added. The Warehousing Division of the Navy released the facility as a disposal center on March 31, 1947. Prior to acquisition by the Navy, the property was occupied by industrial facilities, railroad tracks and turnouts, and vacant land. One of the parcels (Parcel 16) was utilized by Union Tank Company as a manufacturing plant (information regarding the exact type of manufacturing was not provided among the documents reviewed). The improved portions of the property contained a warehouse, shop and office buildings, two 550-gallon fuel underground storage tanks (one diesel and one gasoline), and a spur track.
Subsequent to its use by the Navy, the property was transferred to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC). The RFC intended to use the facility as a disposal center for the storage of surplus property from any of the U.S. Government branches. The leases for specific parcels were terminated during the period from 1947 through 1949, and the properties reverted to the respective owners.

The property currently is under private ownership and is utilized for industrial purposes.
