US Army Corps of Engineer Sacramento District History (1992)
During 1943, the United States of America acquired 12 leaseholds, 11 by leases and one by Declaration of Taking, for a total of 4.259 acres of land.
The Oakland Area Hospital was located within the City of Oakland, in Alameda County, California. The site was acquired for use as a station hospital by the U.S. Army, Medical Corps. Also, it was suggested the site be used as troop housing for the Army. The site has been referred to as Oakland Area Station Hospital or Oakland Area ASF Regional Station Hospital. Improvements at the site were as follows: an eight story hotel (Oakland Hotel) for conversion into a station hospital; a one story garage and residence for the purpose of new construction to provide housing and messing facilities; and two unimproved parcels of land for a motor pool and parking area.
On 11 September 1946, 1.377 acres was transferred to the Veterans Administration (VA). The following year, on 17 February 1947, the remaining 2.882 acres was transferred to the VA, for a total of 4.259 acres of land. Responsibility for restoration and other obligations under the 12 leases was also transferred to the VA. Current owners of the site include ICH Associates, Hotel Oakland Associates, and four private owners.
