Palen Pass, east of Camp Coxcomb, was the site of several corps maneuvers conducted in the California-Arizona Maneuver Area. Defensive fortifications were built at the Pass and still exist. During corps maneuvers one division would defend the Pass and the others would attack and try to take it. There is a dirt road leading to the Pass, but it is recommended that only 4-wheel drive vehicles be used. To reach the Pass, proceed to the Camp Coxcomb turnoff of Sate Route 177. The dirt road that heads eastward from 177 is the Palen Pass Rd. The Pass is 18 miles down that dirt road.
