Riots, Protests, and Other Civil Disturbances
The Redlands Emergency, August 1893

In and around Redlands, San Bernardino County, serious disturbances and threats of personal violence to the Chinese developed during the latter part of August, 1893. Companies E, F and G, Ninth Infantry, located in Riverside and San Bernardino, were ordered to their armories to prepare for possible riot control duty. This action discouraged the would be rioters and the unrest subsided without further incident.

From the Report of the Adjutant General, 1893-1894:

The last of August, 1893, quite serious disturbances and threats of personal violence to the Chinese occurred at and near Redlands, in San Bernardino County, and the commanding officer of the First Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Johnson, under instructions from the Governor, ordered his Adjutant-General, Lieut.-Col. Butler, to proceed in person to that place, with orders to thoroughly inform himself of all the conditions, and report direct to him. At the same time Companies F, of Riverside, E, of San Bernardino, and G, of Redlands, all of the Ninth Infantry, were ordered to their armories and to hold themselves in readiness should the affair prove of sufficient importance to require their services. Fortunately these prompt orders becoming known to the riotous persons, the threatened violence was prevented. The very general prejudice against the Chinese threatens to become more serious every year, and, unless the recent legislation of Congress is carried out in good faith, the irritation will increase. I am satisfied, had not the prompt action by the Governor been taken, a serious riot would have occurred and perhaps bloodshed, which would have been a source of much regret. These companies are entitled to payment as provided in Section 2065, Political Code. The opinion of the Attorney-General is that they are entitled to payment, as the service was actual.
