US Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles
District History (1994)
On 17 October 1945, the U.S. Army acquired
the 1.00 acre site on Bald Mountain, 8 miles south of Santa Ynez
in the Los Padres National Forest. The site was acquired through
a Special Use Permit from the Department of Agriculture.
The site was required for the operation and maintenance of a
temporary signal equipment testing station. A tent camp for housing
the required personnel was constructed on the site.
On 11 June 1946, the site was declared surplus and was retransferred
to the Department of Agriculture on 25 March 1947. The letter
of termination also relieved "the Army of any stipulations
pertaining to the restoration of the site." The property
is currently owned by Ronald Reagan and is being used for cattle
grazing. The FAA and Southern California Edison have communication
equipment at the site. Also, the University of California, Santa
Barbara, has cloud seeding equipment located at the site.
