- Hemet is a small town about 25 miles southeast
of Riverside. There was a private flying school here, the Ryan
School of Aeronautics, at Ryan Airport, 2.5 miles southwest of
town. The school was contracted by the Army Air Forces to give
elementary and advanced flight training to Army pilots. There
was an auxiliary field, Ryan Air Field #1, 4.5 miles northwest
of Hemet.
