Torrance Engineer Refinery Battalion
Camp
History
by Sgt. Maj. Daniel M. Sebby, Military
Historian, California Military Department
Very little is known about this camp.
This camp was used to house soldiers working or training at General
Petroleum Company's Torrance Refinery. This refinery is now owned
by ExxonMobil.
The camp site consisted of a seven acre
leased parcel that, according to the War Department Inventory
of Owned, Sponsored and Leased Facilities, the site used
"Theater of Operations" type buildings to house 120
enlisted soldiers and 10 officers. The camp cost the War Department
$4,125.00 in annual lease payments and $25,000.00 in construction
costs.
The only unit known to have occupied this
camp was the 1006th Engineer Refinery Battalion. It is not know
if the entire battalion was present or, as the troop capacity
suggests, only selected companies of the battalion
