West Los Angeles Area Station Hospital

Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital (Los Angeles Area Station Hospital) (California Military Department)

The West Los Angeles Area Station Hospital was located at, and used facilities of, the Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital located in the community of Sawtelle, now West Lost Angeles. In addition to medical activities at the hospital, there is evidence that the Western Defense Command placed anti-aircraft defenses at the site. The hospital provided medical support to Army activities in the western portion of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, less the Los Angeles Port of Embarkation, which had its own station hospital in Torrance. The eastern portion of the LA Metro area was covered by the Pasadena Area Station Hospital and the Los Angeles Port of Embarkation's Camp Anza Station Hospital in Arlington.

US Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District History (1994)

A real estate file for this site was not found at the Real Estate Division, Los Angeles District, US Army Corps of Engineers. However, the Permanent Real Estate Ledger indicates that a total of 166-acres was acquired from the Veteran's Administration by the Department of the Army by means of a Use Permit on 21 May 1942.

No records were found which pertain to the existence or use of this site at the West Los Angeles Area Station Hospital. However, the Permanent Real Estate Ledger indicates transfer information. Therefore, it can be assumed that the site was used as an Army Hospital during World War II.

The Permanent Real Estate Ledger also indicates that the West Los Angeles Area Station Hospital was formally retransferred to the Veteran's Administration on 2 August 1945.

US Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District History (1993)

Location: The former hospital used the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) site located in Los Angeles, California, approximately 10 miles west of downtown Los Angeles near the 1-405 (San Diego Freeway) and Wilshire Boulevard.

Site History: A total of 166-acres was acquired from the Veteran's Administration by the War Department by Use Permit on 21 May 1942. No records were found which identified how this site was used by the Army.

However it can be assumed that it was used as an Army Hospital. Although documents dating back to the late 1800's were housed there, no specific documentation reflecting Army use between 1942 and 1945 was identified.

The history of the center indicates that it was originally the Pacific Branch of the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, originally established by Congress in 1887. Since that time the site has been used to provide for a variety of veterans' health care needs.

Generally, the West Los Angeles VAMC can be divided into two areas, north and south of Wilshire Boulevard. The northern area has many buildings throughout, including several quonset huts. However, VA staff were not aware if these were used or set up specifically by the Army. No known contamination problems have been identified.

The southern portion of the West Los Angeles VAMC includes the grounds of the Wadsworth Building, the main hospital building. This site has a history of supporting several buildings; the Barry Hospital was built in 1900, the original Wadsworth Hospital was built in 1927, and the new Wadsworth Hospital was built in 1975.

A small portion of the original VAMC grounds are currently owned by Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. This land is commonly known as Westwood Park, and is located between Veteran Avenue and the 1-405, about 1/2 mile to the south of Wilshire Boulevard.
