Major Naval History Collection Donated: The wonderful collection of Original Naval Art accumulated over a lifetime has now become part of the California Center for Military History - California Military Museum.

Three volunteer members of the California Center for Military History Southern Region worked two days and evenings until 11 PM packing and transporting the art work and over 3000 books and artifacts from the private collection of Commander Richard Halsey Best. Our deepest thanks are extended to 1LT Mark Susuki, SGT Al Andrade and MAJ Ralph Ramirez for this special emergency duty. Everything had to be completed by Friday, June 21st and Thursday June 20th at 11 PM qualified for the deadline.

Commander Best past away last October in Santa Monica. Through the kindness and generosity of his son, Richard H. Best II, the wonderful collection will soon be available for public viewing.

Plans are in the works for a major display to honor Commander Best during the festivities celebrating the anniversary of the Navy. The October dinner celebrations will not only honor the Birth of the Navy, but also honor all of the Veterans of World War II who served in any of the campaigns.of Liberation in the Pacific war.

Nine paintings and 3000 books of Naval and Military History artifacts add to the great reference library and over 30,000 artifacts that now comprise the California Military Museum.

To Honor the Request of the Family, the Commander Richard Halsey Best Collection will be housed and displayed in Southern California.

Commander Best received the Navy Cross for his successful attack against the Japanese Cruiser Shoho and the Japanese Carrier Akagi. He is the only U.S. Naval flyer who successfully attacked and critically damaged two enemy ships during the Battle of Midway. He continued the attack in spite of critical injuries. The Navy Cross was personally presented by the Commander In Chief of the Pacific Fleet, Admiral Nimitz, to then LT Best. The Battle of MIdway has been recognized by the U.S. Navy, as the pivotal engagement of the Pacific War

The California Center for Military History Southern Region takes great pride in accepting the unique Museum quality collection from Richard H. Best II.
Los Alamitos Painting Project: Members of the State Military Reserve, California Center for Military History Southern Region, turned out May 11, 2002, for the first of several days of hard work preparing an outdoor Tank exhibit for painting.SFC Edmundo Martinez, a police officer with the Santa Ana Police Department, said, "It was a good day of hard gratifying work . We sanded and removed and primed all the rust areas and finalized with the newest of exterior prime paint materials". MAJ Tom Nott, an architect in civilian life from South Pasadena, prepared the work plan and designed the material use and application, "I even had a hand in getting a terrible sun burn while we prepared the Tank for painting...it was a fun project." "I had fun painting and fixing up that old tank. It sure needed our work, and the photos show our hard work," said 1LT Mark Susuki, owner of SuperColor Pro Lab in Santa Monica, CA

The tank is permanently displayed at the Joint Forces Training Base at Los Alamitos, CA (formerly the Los Alamitos Naval Air Station). The JFTB is Headquarters of California's 40th Infantry Division (Mechanized) and also headquarters of the Southern Region of the California Center for Military History.

Further exhibit preparation includes painting of a UH IM (Huey) Helicopter and dedication of the outdoor exhibits in the Fall of 2002. The artifacts are part of the Statewide responsibilities of the California Military Museum, with which the California Center for Military History supports.

New Book on California and the Civil War: Bear Flag and Bay State in the Civil War: The Californians of the Second Massachusetts Cavalry by Thomas E. Parson. The Second Massachusetts Cavalry included the only organized group (5 companies totaling 504 men) from California to fight in the east during the Civil War. Led by a young Boston aristocrat, Colonel Charles R. Lowell, these men began their wartime careers in Northern Virginia in 1862, clashing with the partisan rangers of Major John S. Mosby, in a deadly world of guerrilla warfare. In August of 1864, the regiment was assigned to Major General Phil Sheridan's Army of Shenandoah and served through all of the battles in the victorious campaign to clear the valley of Confederates, witnessing the final surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. This account tells what these men from California and Massachusetts accomplished, how they communicated, and how they viewed themselves. The book contains three appendices that list the battle casualties of the regiment during its largest engagements. Photographs and a bibliography are also included
